Registered Nurse R.N.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of all clinical coordinators, provide leadership in the organization of direct medical care. Candidate should act as a team leader to supervise and evaluate the nursing care administered by licensed practical nurses and other support staff according to their scope of practice and competence. All protocols, policies and procedures should be implemented and followed. The RN performs other duties as requested by his or her supervisors
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Although it is not possible to provide an exhaustive list of all types of duties, responsibilities and performance standards, the following are the essential job functions:
- Implements and documents nursing interventions as per the MD or NP written or verbal orders and in accordance with nursing theory and protocols.
- Provides on-going assessment and evaluation of detainee status at specified times to determine effectiveness of interventions, response to treatment, outcome and/or when significant changes occur in detainee condition.
- Assess, identify and provide education and training to detainees and staff to improve knowledge of healthy behavior and or prevent unhealthy habits.
- Maintain commitment and responsibility for professional growth and competency through on-going activities that promote a professional accurate knowledge base.
- Must complete nursing assessment of detainees in a timely manner, including triage and prioritizing the needs and requests of the detainee population.
- Attends department meetings, staff development seminars and mandatory in-services as requested or as needed.
- Supervision and assistance to licensed practical nurses and other medical or security staff that work in or support the health service department.
- Possesses the physical and mental ability to respond well to a stressful situation and environment.
- Ability to establish a rapport and deal professionally with detainees from a variety of different ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds.
- Adheres to safety and security policies and participation in disaster drills.
- Ability to plant and read PPD plants.
- Knowledge of model and application of emergency medical procedures such as CPR, including the operation of an automatic external defibrillator.
- Collects specimens and cultures, as well as perform venipuncture when necessary.
- Knowledge of chronic diseases such as HIV, diabetes, and hepatitis, including medications used to treat, as well as monitoring such diseases according to policies and protocols.
- Perform med-line when needed.
- Perform any other duties as requested by Director of Nursing, Health Service Administrator or Medical Director.

A: KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
Good knowledge of:
- Nursing Theory and process
- Excellent Assessment skills
Working skill in:
- Making sound judgments in making decisions in accordance with departmental rules, regulations, and policies
- Communicating effectively both orally and in writing
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public
B: QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate from an approved nursing education program with a diploma, Associate degree, or Bachelor degree in nursing
C: LICENSE & CERTIFICATION REQUIRED
Must have a current valid RN license in Rhode Island, and satisfy a background check.
FACTOR 2 – SUPERVISORY CONTROL
This position reports to the Director of Nursing, Health Service Administrator and Medical Director and is responsible for thorough, accurate and timely delivery of a wide range of medical services to the detainee population. This includes supervision of other para-professional medical personnel.
FACTOR 3 – GUIDELINES
Must follow all proper policies and procedures of the institution. Suggestions for improvement encouraged.

FACTOR 5 – ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Requires regular and reliable attendance, as well as possess physical and mental endurance to respond properly and professionally to stressful situations and work environment.
FACTOR 6 – PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work does involve some walking, standing, driving personal motor vehicle, lifting objects up to 25lbs, bending, stooping, reaching and speaking clearly.
FACTOR 7 – WORK ENVIRONMENT
The correctional environment is a fast paced, stressful area of nursing specialty. Applicant must possess a professional work ethic, and work well under pressure.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Experience preferred, but will train the right candidate.
