History of the Facility

The Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility, currently operated by the Board of Directors of the Central Falls Detention Facility Corporation (CFDFC), was the first publicly owned and privately operated adult secure detention facility when their doors opened in November 1993. The special non-profit, quasi-public detention facility was developed for use by the United Stated Marshal Service (USMS) in the Northeast which later extended to also include the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) in 2005. The facility operates at maximum security while utilizing an architectural and high tech design and construction containment system.

Under Intergovernmental Agreements (IGAs) with federal agencies, the Wyatt Facility currently provides maximum security housing for up to 706 adult male and 40 female detainees, following a $47 million expansion that was completed in December 2006; increasing the previous maximum all male occupancy of 302 to the current 746 bed space.

Routine and special transportation services are also provided. These services include transport of detainees to Districts of Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont courthouses as well as transportation to halfway houses in the districts; provide courtroom security, which allows Deputy US Marshals to perform other duties; transport detainees to other local jails at the request of the United States Marshal Service and transport detainees to medical appointments as required.
